I have a thing for old movies and romantic-era composers. The Seven Year Itch, starring Marilyn Monroe, combined both of these things. Today I was listening to Saint-Saens – my all time favorite composer – and it reminded me of how much I love that era of music. Actually, that’s the only era of classical music I like. Mozart makes me gag and Bach is just annoying. Give me Stravinsky! Anyway, I started thinking of all that it brought me to this scene from the movie. I love Rachmaninoff — he walked me down the staircase when I got married to The General via Vocalise.
In my single days, any man who played me Rachmaninoff like this would have elicited the same reaction Monroe gave from this dream sequence. Of course this never happened, which is probably why it’s a dream sequence. All the music guys I hung out with were trumpet players….and they’re not exactly known for their refined qualities.
